| Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel: |
 |
|
 |
|
What is it? |
Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) has a maximum allowable sulfur content of
15ppm. By comparison, conventional Low Sulfur Diesel (which we have been
using since the early 90's) had max 500ppm. |
|
Why? |
To help reduce emissions, and help facilitate the operation of advanced
emission control devices, which cannot tolerate high levels of sulfur in the
diesel fuel. Sulfur will kill the catalysts and corrode the metal components.
|
| When? | At the refineries by June 1, 2006, and at the pumps by September 1, 2006 (or
sooner). |
| |
| What does this mean to me? |
| Economy: | Energy content lowered by approx 1%, which may result in a noticeable
decrease in economy and performance. Use of AMSOIL Cetane Booster or equivalent will help combat this problem by raising the cetane level of your diesel
fuel. |
| Leaks: | Some vehicle owners who recently began using ULSD developed fuel leaks.
This is linked to a change in aromatic content of the fuel, as well as the age
and type of gasket material. Fuel additives are not a solution to this particular
problem, as they do not change the aromatic content of the fuel. |
| Lubricity: |
The hydro-desulfurization process used to reduce sulfur content has a negative
effect on lubricating qualities of the diesel fuel. Most of the major pipelines in
North America have stated that they will not allow the transport of diesel fuel
treated with lubricity additive, for fear of contamination of their other products
such as Jet Fuel, so the responsibility for lubricity treatment rests with the postpipeline
distribution network. However the ASTM Lubricity Standard adopted
is not as high as the fuel system manufacturers recommend. We recommend
the use of Stanadyne Performance Formula with every tank of diesel to
increase fuel lubricity and thus extend pump life. |
| |
| We would be happy to discuss with you any concerns you may have regarding the use of
ULSD in your engine. It is important to be aware that neither our warranty, nor that of
any OE parts manufacturer, cover fuel system failures due to inadequate fuel lubricity,
fuel contamination, or leaks due to changes in fuel aromatics.
